Gianni Lombard Gets Sharks No 10 Nod vs Cardiff URC 2026

JP Pietersen backs Gianni Lombard to step up at flyhalf as the Sharks face Cardiff at the Arms Park in the URC 2026. Five Springboks return.

Three flyhalves in three matches. That is the injury-forced reality facing the Sharks as they prepare to take on Cardiff at the Arms Park on Friday night in the United Rugby Championship. Now it falls to Gianni Lombard to steady the ship — and coach JP Pietersen is backing him to do exactly that.

Lombard Steps In as Third Flyhalf

Vusi Moyo started at No 10 against the Stormers but was forced off injured. Jordan Hendrikse then wore the jersey against Lyon in the EPCR Challenge Cup, only to suffer the same fate. Lombard, the third man up, now carries the weight of a position that has been a revolving door in the early weeks of the campaign.

Pietersen is not treating it as a crisis. "It's a big change at 10, but hopefully we can get settled at flyhalf," he said. "He's been training well, he's applied himself, he's leading well, speaking well in the group and he's got heaps of experience and he's a gifted player. His fundamentals are good and hopefully the team can help him." That is a measured endorsement from a coach who clearly sees this as an opportunity as much as a necessity.

Five Springboks Return to Lineup

Lombard will not be out there alone. Five Springboks return after being rested for last Saturday's 40-33 win in France. André Esterhuizen, the centre and captain, is back in the starting lineup alongside wingers Ethan Hooker and Edwill van der Merwe. Props Ox Nché and Thomas du Toit come off the bench. That is serious firepower slotting back into a team that has shown it can win on the road.

Away form, in fact, is the explicit focus for Pietersen this week. "From last season's results point of view, we never really performed away from home so that's something that we do want to be better at," he said. "We need to be more consistent away from home and not just be a team that performs with home-ground advantage — that's what we're chasing for the Cardiff and Munster games." With a trip to Thomond Park also on the horizon, the urgency is clear.

Cardiff Presents Tough Away Test

Cardiff will not be accommodating hosts. Pietersen flagged their strong home record and the South African influence in the Welsh camp, warning his squad they must be "very awake" at the Arms Park. Former Sharks centre Le Roux Malan now plays for Cardiff and knows the Durban outfit's systems intimately. Coach Corniel van Zyl guided them to a top-eight finish last season, losing just once at home in the process. That context matters.

The Sharks arrive in Cardiff with genuine momentum — three wins from their last five across all competitions, including that hard-fought result against Lyon. Lombard's debut in the No 10 jersey will tell us a great deal about this squad's depth. Next up after Cardiff is Munster at Thomond Park, and Pietersen needs answers before that storm arrives.
