Megafoon RugbyIn this episode of Megafoon Rugby, JP Pietersen reveals the Sharks' strategy as Zekhethelo Siyaya takes on the flyhalf role for the final URC matches. He also addresses the team's injury struggles and the emergence of young talent.
um yeah you guys are still in the midst of a bit of an injury injury battle um but the decision to play siya attend when you had john smith there um maybe you can speak into why you opted for ross brody and john smith to play from the bench uh my niklas um so obviously um with siya at 10 We're planning ahead, planning for the future. Obviously, Zahn is moving on. Obviously, he's last season at the Sharks. And we want to see if CIR got the capabilities of playing 10. It's good if you can play more than one position.
He played in high school until, I think, 16. He played 16, 15 years old. He played five and then he moved later, transitioned to fullback. So we just want to see what he got at 10. Thank you.
Jan, you can go ahead. Thanks, Navasini. Thanks, JP. JP, I know there's a lot. I mean, obviously, you've just been asked about the fly-off and the future, and that's one thing.
And we've seen Sias given his view about the last next two games, his last two games. What's most, I don't know if it's concerning or impressive, but if you look at your list of injured players, I mean, that's been the story of the season. yet there's such an impressive list of players in your depth but you haven't had much of those players or many of those players available at extended periods has that been a challenge yeah yeah if you look at it um you can if you don't if you don't have plays available you don't both um you know about cohesion you don't build consistency um and i think that's been a trend we could never get our team together for more than four games and there's always two games max where we can be together both cohesion and then another injury happens or something happens so i think that's that's that's it's been that's been one of that yeah years where it says we've just been unlucky with injuries um but it also yeah it's just it shows that other guys give up take opportunities um look at it cia took his opportunity gilmo take his opportunity we would never know if the if there was injuries that we got a ci we got a gilly and we got a Hopefully, Lillie Bester can also come through and perform. Obviously, that's... Korné Rahal's been playing well all year.
He's coming up with his 50th game. Only 23 years old We would have never seen players like that if injuries happen But I just concurred to the young men that put their hand up and took the opportunity I understand there two aspects One is your long goal and plans and stuff You got to build, you've got to see these guys, what they had for the future. But the other thing is you've still got to compete in major European competitions and that's when you need those guys for the experience. I know injuries happen, but how do you plan for next how do you try and avoid this is it avoidable to have such a long injury list um yeah it's a good question you're asking about how you avoid the injury list um i think if somebody knows how to avoid injuries or get less injuries in a in the team i think it will be will be quite a billionaire at the moment um it's just a lot of them it's some freak injuries and and a lot of them, it's just unlucky injuries. And it is what it is this year.
And hopefully we can get better with our preseason and planning and do a different approach of what we were doing before to get the availability of the player going forward. That's something we can try in a preseason, Jan, at the moment. I don't have to answer a few. Thanks, JP. Much appreciated.
Thanks, Jan. Next question, please. Angus, go ahead. Thanks my most afternoon JP. Just to touch on Jan's previous question a bit, with the season being said and done for you guys, what would you like to get out of the next two games to build towards the upcoming season, 2020-2027 season of the Sharks?
I think it's obviously we always want to put strong results with the two games. Just thanks to fans for supporting us and then obviously players just want to play for each other. It's It's been a tough campaign with a lot of challenges. And you must give credit to the group of players that played most of the games that keep coming Monday with a positive attitude and fighting to make the jersey proud. And obviously, that's why we make the move, playing C.
I.A. 10, to see if we can find some gold in C.I.A.
He can play 10 for us. And then we can see maybe Lely Vester, how he's tracking with his development. and also great to see that Patukhian is doing well for us too at Lucet and obviously Kavu for Ox. And yeah just a good performance will be good for us but obviously we obviously disappointed I think Sia spoke already about it not to qualify for top eight so it still hurts but what we can do is put a good performance up thanks aphel next question rowan go ahead hi jp um i noticed in the selection that you went with your your bomb squad or the guys that you've been using kind of in a bomb squad role in previous matches, your two boxers, and I just wanted to check is that an indication of the front row battle or the tight battle that you're expecting from them? From Benetton, thanks.
Yeah, Benetton is a strong side and we do got a good set piece and a lot of internationals italian internationals in there um yeah i don't know about a bomb squad but um it's just a rotation of players um andrew and putt was out and the whole week of last week didn't train so obviously oxen finish it's good to go um that deservedly to start um and yeah well it's not about the challenges or what bomb squad we bring up is this uh oxen when he's and suck has been looking good so it's great for them to have a start and start the game well for us. That's the same as what Part 2 and Fez and Mahanru did against Edinburgh. They had a good start, won the game for the whole first half so that's good that we build depth and competitiveness in the squad and like maybe it's answered Jan's question about European that you need to build depth in your squad and you need to build competitiveness and obviously Oxe and Benny and it's got a reputation that he can speak for himself. Thank you and can I just ask one more? They're coming off or they stunned Leinster recently.
What have you guys picked up from that performance even though it was at home? Yeah like I said they got internationals, Italian internationals in there. I got a good midfield with Malakai at centre. They got a good kicking game. They do well with Lionel.
They got Reino. Probably knows the Sox in and out so you got inside info for what we bring to the table They got a good pack They good on the ball Lucy still balls So if you can see what they did against Leinster they pressurized them in the kicking game. Good on the ball. And obviously set-piece, they were good. So we know what's coming this way.
I think we both sides are trying to finish the season strong. We didn't have the greater season. We both lie 10th and 11th or 12th. Hopefully we're going to put a good contest for the game. Both teams play to their strengths and put a good spectacle for the fans.
Thank you. Rias, you can go ahead. Thanks, Novosni. Hi, JP. JP, just with one eye on next season, of course you've been in the hot seat for a bit now and holding towards next season, you'll have a full pre-season to look forward to before you can build on a full season for next year.
In your opinion, what needs to be worked on to get this side to where you really want them to be and to be really competitive? If you look at our season, I think the main thing, I think Jan answered the question or asked the question is, if you want to compete in both competitions, you need player availability. I think we struggled this season with it. So that's something we need to look at. S&C, medical staff and our rugby program can be better in the pre-season to have player availability through the season and give us a good opportunity to compete in both competitions and to pick from a squad of 40 that you can be competitive for both competitions.
So that's something we will go in deeper detail and how we can find out and it's something we will do some research and yeah obviously squad is coming in squad matthew so it's new attacking uh guy coming in so to see when he gets here then we can chat about how we can get better we all have a proper review after the season now we're just focusing on on benetton and zebra two games before we Switzerland pre-season.
