Schools Rugby Incidents Investigated 2026

Two schools rugby matches were abandoned over the weekend in incidents serious enough to draw responses from two provincial education departments, casting a dark shadow over what should be a celebration of the game at grassroots level.

Violence Erupts During Gauteng Schools Match

In Pretoria, a Noordvaal Cup clash between Menlopark and Dr EG Jansen descended into chaos after a mass brawl reportedly erupted during the match. According to reports, a player allegedly used the k-word during the game, triggering a confrontation that drew in EG Jansen players, Menlopark old boys and, disturbingly, parents from the stands. The match was called off before it could reach a conclusion.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile was unambiguous in his condemnation. "Violence has no place in our schools or on our sporting fields," Maile said. "Every learner has the right to participate in sport in an environment that is safe, respectful and free from intimidation." He confirmed the department was gathering reports from both schools and other stakeholders before determining whether further disciplinary action would follow. Racist Incident Halts Cape Town Derby

Separately, in Cape Town, a derby between Fairmont High School and The Settlers High School was also halted after an alleged racist incident. A match official was heard over the referee communication system alleging that the k-word had been used during play. The Western Cape Department of Education confirmed it is now reviewing available video footage of the incident.

"Racism has no place in any school environment," said Western Cape education department communications director Bronagh Hammond. She confirmed both schools were following the necessary internal processes and that the department would provide support, including counselling services, where required. Hammond also called for restraint from outside parties. "We respectfully request that the schools be afforded the opportunity to conduct their investigations without interference or disruption," she said.
