Paul de Villiers Springboks Captaincy 2026: Kolisi Era Over?

Three wins. England, Scotland, Wales. All without Siya Kolisi. That is the reality Rassie Erasmus and South African rugby must now confront — and former England fly-half Stuart Barnes believes it could signal the end of Kolisi's tenure as Springbok captain.

Barnes made the bold call on the Times Sport Ruck podcast, prompted by the stunning debut month from Paul de Villiers. The Stormers flanker wore the number six shirt across all three July Nations Championship fixtures and was among the standouts each time, filling a void most thought impossible to ignore.

'Have we seen the end of Siya Kolisi as Springboks captain?' Barnes asked directly. 'A giant of the game, an all-time great, but all good things come to pass.' He went further, likening De Villiers to two of South Africa's most revered loose forwards. 'What we have seen is his replacement, a young man, come on and be as good as Ruben Kruger and Heinrich Brussow were.' That is not faint praise. That is a changing-of-the-guard statement.

The Springboks used 49 players during the July block — 43 across the Nations Championship fixtures alone — including six debutants. De Villiers was one of them. None made a bigger impression. Barnes credited Erasmus for the seamless way he transitions his squad, and warned it may already be happening at captaincy level without anyone noticing. 'Erasmus is the sort of coach who is so good at just sliding this through to the point we don't even end up writing a column about they have got a new captain. It just happens. One minute he's there, the next he's not, and South Africa move seamlessly on towards the third World Cup.'

South Africa sit top of the Nations Championship Southern Hemisphere standings on points difference ahead of New Zealand, and the competition resumes in November. Before then, the Boks face Argentina on August 8 before a four-Test series against the All Blacks. Kolisi is expected to return from the hamstring injury that kept him out of July and will push hard to reclaim his place and the armband. Whether Erasmus obliges is now a genuine question — and Barnes thinks the answer may already have been quietly decided.
