Markus Muller Set to Break Frans Steyn Bok Record 2026

Markus Muller could become the youngest Springbok debutant of the professional era, set to break Frans Steyn's record at just 19 years and 118 days old.

Nineteen years old and already on the brink of rugby history. Markus Muller, the teenage Stormers centre, has been named in Rassie Erasmus's 37-man Springbok squad for next month's Nations Championship Tests against Italy, France and Ireland — and if he takes the field against the Azzurri in Turin on 7 November, he will do so as the youngest Test debutant of the professional era in South African rugby.

Muller Younger Than Steyn's Debut

The numbers are stark. Frans Steyn set the benchmark when he made his debut against Ireland on 11 November 2006 at 19 years and 181 days. Muller will be just 19 years and 118 days old when the Boks kick off against Italy at the Allianz Stadium — 63 days younger than Steyn was on that day in Dublin two decades ago. That is not a marginal record. That is a generational one.

It would not make Muller the youngest Springbok of all time, however. That honour belongs to Jack Hartley, who was 18 years and 18 days old when he faced the British Isles in 1891 — a record that belongs to a different era entirely and is unlikely to be threatened in the modern game. Within the professional period, though, Muller stands alone. Canan Moodie, who debuted against Australia in September 2022 at 19 years and 302 days, currently sits second on that list. Muller would leapfrog him and Steyn in one appearance.

Matfield Backs Teenage Centre's Potential

Victor Matfield, who has watched Muller develop at the Stormers, summed up the anticipation bluntly: 'He's going to have such a big impact.' That kind of endorsement from a man who has seen virtually every great South African back of the last 25 years carries genuine weight.

Muller's inclusion in the Nations Championship squad is a bold selection from Erasmus, but the teenager's URC form with the Stormers has been impossible to ignore. South Africa face Italy on 7 November, France and Ireland to follow — and a debut against the Azzurri would etch Muller's name permanently into the record books.
