Rassie Names Six New Springboks for Nations Championship 2026

Rassie Erasmus says six new Springbok call-ups thoroughly deserve their chance as South Africa prepare for Italy, France and Ireland in November 2026.

Six players hearing their names read out in a Springbok squad announcement for the first time — that moment never loses its meaning, and Rassie Erasmus made it clear on Wednesday that every one of them has earned it the hard way.

Six Springbok Debutants Named to Squad

Lock Riley Norton, loose forward Emmanuel Tshituka, flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed, centre Markus Muller, winger Sebastian de Klerk and utility back Luan Giliomee were all named in the 37-man squad for the Springboks' final four Tests of the season — the European leg of the Nations Championship against Italy, France and Ireland, followed by the finals weekend in London at the end of November.

"We've had all six players on our radar for a while now, and they've delivered consistently for their respective franchises in the last two seasons, so they thoroughly deserve their call-ups," Erasmus said. That consistency over two full seasons is the qualifier that matters. One good month doesn't get you into this squad. Sustained performance does.

Erasmus confirmed the coaching staff have had direct eyes on most of them. "We've seen what most of them are capable of first-hand in our season-opening matches and at our training camps, so we are delighted to see what they have to offer on this tour." That familiarity removes some of the unknown — these aren't cold call-ups based purely on franchise form. They've been watched, assessed and found ready.

Junior World Champions Earn Call-Ups

Three of the six carry Junior Springbok pedigree that speaks for itself. Norton, Giliomee and Ahmed were all part of Junior Springbok squads that won the Junior World Championship, and Giliomee extended his high-performance résumé further with a stint in the Blitzboks programme. Erasmus flagged that as a marker of character. "Riley, Luan and Yaqeen were also part of Junior Springbok squads that have won the Junior World Championship, and Luan also played for the Blitzboks, so they know what it takes to perform at top level."

Muller's call-up carries an added layer of intrigue. The Stormers centre is reportedly on course to break a 20-year-old Springbok record currently held by Frans Steyn when the November Tests kick off — a milestone that underlines just how highly the management rate his trajectory. We covered his URC debut for the Stormers against the Scarlets earlier this month, and the step up to Test level now looks inevitable rather than premature.

Debutants Not Fillers, Erasmus Insists

The context of this squad matters too. Four World Cup winners are absent through injury, which creates the openings — but Erasmus was clear the six debutants aren't fillers. They're the future arriving ahead of schedule. "Building squad depth has always been one of our key pillars as a team, and all those players have shown that they have what it takes to compete at top franchise level," he said.

The head coach pulled no punches about what awaits them in Europe. "There is no doubt facing some of the top teams in elite international rugby will be a completely different challenge, but we have full faith in them to do their best on tour." Italy in Turin opens the account on 7 November, then France and Ireland follow in what is a brutal three-Test gauntlet. Every result feeds the Nations Championship standings directly. "This is an intense competition and every point counts," Erasmus added. "We have a big job ahead, and it will be important to hit the ground running."

The squad assembles in Italy in groups on Sunday and Monday. The Boks' Nations Championship campaign resumes at the Allianz Stadium in Turin — and six new faces will be watching, waiting and ready for their moment.
