Racial Abuse Alleged Behind Match Violence

In a statement from governing body chairman Riaan van Aswegen, the school condemned the violence outright — but drew a direct line between the conduct of a group of Menlopark old boys and the physical altercation that followed. "Violence, racism and any other form of unacceptable behaviour are fundamentally inconsistent with the school's values, discipline and principles," the statement read.

According to EG Jansen, the group had gathered behind the in-goal area during the match. Witness statements received by the school allege that alcohol was being consumed and that racist slurs — including the K-word and comments that certain players "belong on a farm" — were directed at their black and coloured players. The school says parents flagged the abuse to a Menlopark teacher and asked for the group to be moved, but that no action was taken. EG Jansen say they requested CCTV footage from Menlopark to support the investigation but were told the relevant camera had not captured the incident. The school has confirmed that the pupils involved have been identified and that internal disciplinary proceedings are under way. A comprehensive report — including witness statements and supporting evidence — is being compiled for submission to the Gauteng Department of Basic Education.
