Across 47 matches Van der Merwe averages nearly eight tackles per game, with a single-game peak of 23, pointing to a hooker who consistently shoulders a heavy defensive workload. His carrying numbers are steady rather than explosive, but his presence across more than 2,000 minutes of competitive rugby underlines the durability and reliability he brings to the forward pack.
