Els arrives from the bench with a clear defensive mandate, averaging close to four tackles per appearance across Premiership and Champions Cup rugby. His carrying is minimal and functional rather than a primary weapon, suggesting his impact is concentrated on slowing opposition ball and making his presence felt at the breakdown. The 11-tackle haul in his standout match underlines the ceiling of what he brings when conditions demand it.
