Across nine Currie Cup appearances as a replacement, Newman contributes most consistently on the defensive side, averaging close to two tackles per outing with a single-game peak of seven that shows he can be a genuine defensive presence when called upon. His carrying numbers are modest by design — just over one carry per match — yet his best individual performance of four carries for 34 metres indicates the capacity to make metres count when given opportunity. The overall picture is of a disciplined bench operator who earns his minutes through defensive reliability rather than ball-in-hand volume.
