Stormers Rule Out De Allende, Eye Jurenzo Julius

The Stormers have ended their pursuit of Damian de Allende. No formal offer will be tabled for the Springbok centre, and Cape Town's attention has shifted sharply toward a far younger target — Jurenzo Julius of the Sharks.

Budget Constraints End De Allende Pursuit

De Allende, 34, had been linked with a homecoming following Dan du Plessis's departure to Bordeaux Bègles and ongoing uncertainty around Ruhan Nel's future at the club. Those midfield vacancies were real, and lengthy discussions did take place over a possible return. But a source close to the Cape franchise made the club's position clear: the Stormers' strategy is not to make an offer to every Springbok or star player who wants to return to Cape Town — that would simply be unaffordable. De Allende remains contracted to Japanese club the Panasonic Wild Knights until June 2027, which added further complexity to any deal.

The salary squeeze is not hypothetical. The arrivals of Siya Kolisi, Cheslin Kolbe and Wilco Louw have already placed meaningful pressure on the Stormers' budget. Signing a 34-year-old on a top-tier contract, however decorated his career, was never going to stack up against those competing demands.

Stormers Target Young Star Julius

So the focus has moved to Julius. The 22-year-old Paul Roos product is contracted to the Sharks in Durban until June next year and is understood to be weighing up his options. A player of his age and profile — a genuine prospect rather than a marquee name chasing a homecoming — fits the profile the Stormers appear to be building toward. It is also worth noting that Julius has registered real search interest among SA rugby fans, reflecting just how closely his name is being watched across the country.

The Sharks, meanwhile, will be watching this one carefully. Julius is part of a URC-era squad that head coach John Plumtree is still moulding, and losing a 22-year-old centre mid-contract would be a blow to that project. With Currie Cup rugby underway and the Sharks having already lost to the Cheetahs this season, retaining their best young talent matters now more than ever.

Whether Julius stays in Durban or heads to the Cape, a decision is coming — and both franchises have real skin in the game.
