Mike Vowles has had his hand forced at blindside flank, but the Sharks head coach is backing the disruption to bring an unlikely upside. Danio Botha — a lock by trade — steps into the starting XV for Friday's Currie Cup clash against the Cheetahs at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, replacing Jannes Potgieter who limped off with a knee injury early in last week's hard-fought 26-24 win over the Pumas in Nelspruit.
Botha Brings Versatility to Sharks Lineup
Botha arrives in Durban via the Stormers system, having turned out for UCT in the Varsity Cup and Western Province in the SA Rugby U21 Cup last year. His positional versatility is a bonus; his physicality is the headline. "He's incredibly physical and, given some time in our system, I think he's going to be really good for us and someone to watch," Vowles said. The Sharks boss also confirmed Botha's long-term credentials, adding: "We see him as a player with massive potential."
Beyond Botha's inclusion, the changes are minimal. Bryce Calvert comes onto the bench as reserve hooker in place of Jacques Marais. Vowles is deliberately keeping his combinations intact. "We haven't made many changes — we feel that the more the team plays together, the better we're going to get," he said. That continuity philosophy has merit. The Sharks arrive in Bloemfontein in solid nick, having won four of their last five outings in all competitions.
Cheetahs Arrive in Hot Form
Standing in their way is a Cheetahs side that showed last weekend exactly what they are capable of. Faf de Klerk pulled the strings on his Cheetahs debut as the Free Staters edged the Lions 29-27 at Toyota Stadium — a performance that underlined the settled nature of Johan Ackermann's group. Vowles acknowledged it plainly: "They're a settled team who have played a lot of rugby together, they have some experienced players in their group and we anticipate a physical battle from them." He was equally direct about his side's readiness. "Having seen what our group can do, I have no doubt we'll be able to match them physically."
