SA U18 International Series 2026: Squads Named

South Africa's two U18 squads are locked, loaded and ready to face Europe's finest schoolboy rugby nations on home soil this month. SA Rugby has confirmed the full SA U18 and SA U18 A touring party selections for the U18 International Series, a three-round competition hosted at school venues across the Western Cape that pits the country's best under-18 talent against England, Ireland, France and Georgia.

Development pathway feeds Springbok talent

The series is a cornerstone of SA Rugby's Elite Player Development pathway — the structured pipeline that has consistently fed the Springbok system with battle-hardened talent. For the schoolboys involved, this is not just a festival tournament. It is the proving ground that separates those who stay in provincial age-group rugby from those who accelerate toward the Junior Springboks and, ultimately, the senior game. The fact that ten players in these squads already carry SA U18 caps from last year tells you exactly how seriously this programme is managed.

Those returning players are: Juvan Burden (Western Province, Stellenberg), Jacobus de Villiers (SWD, Oakdale), Mickyle Booise (Western Province, Paarl Gimnasium), Ethan van Biljon (Western Province, Stellenberg), Ncuthu Kepe (Border, Queen's College), Erin Nelson (Eastern Province, Graeme College), Lamla Mgedezi (Free State, Grey College), Thabiso Simelane (Blue Bulls, St Alban's), Nathan Aneke (Sharks, Durban High School), and Lucritia Magua (Eastern Province, Graeme College). Their experience at this level is invaluable when facing seasoned northern hemisphere opposition in what are always physically demanding encounters.

Coaching staff confirmed for both squads

Lwazi Zanqa returns to coach the SA U18 side, with Heinrich Martin again as his assistant. Flash Malinga takes charge of the SA U18 A team, supported by Cobus van Dyk, while Clinton van Rensburg serves as shared defence coach across both squads. The continuity in coaching structures matters — these setups don't get rebuilt from scratch each year, and that stability shows in the quality of players produced.

The Western Cape venues are well chosen. Hoërskool Durbanville opens proceedings on 7 August, with Boland Landbou outside Wellington hosting the second round on 11 August, and Stellenberg High School — itself home to Burden and Van Biljon — staging the final round on 15 August. SA U18 open against France in round one, face Ireland in round two, and close against England in the final round. SA U18 A begin with Ireland, then Georgia, then France.

Sharks dominate provincial representation

The Sharks lead the SA U18 squad's provincial representation with five props alone — Aphelele Chamane (Michaelhouse), Clement Makeleke (Kearsney College), Nic Salamousas (Michaelhouse) and Theo Boshoff (Maritzburg College) among the contingent. Western Province dominate the broader squad numbers, with Paarl Gimnasium providing a remarkable cluster of talent. The Sharks also contribute heavily through the SA U18 A side, where Nathan Aneke, Alex Jankowich and Amogelang Mataboge form a centre-heavy KZN presence.

The timing is deliberate and the stakes are real. With the Currie Cup in full swing and the SA U20s fresh off a dominant World Rugby U20 Championship campaign — defeating France 16-5 and England 53-37 in recent weeks — the pressure on this U18 group to maintain that production line is significant. These are the players who will be eligible for the Baby Boks in two years' time. How they perform against England, Ireland and France over these three rounds will shape selection conversations long before then.

Round one kicks off at Hoërskool Durbanville on 7 August, with SA U18 facing France at 3:30pm.
