Olwethu Makhanya is heading to Ibrox. The Bafana Bafana centre-back is on the verge of completing a move from Philadelphia Union to Rangers FC in a deal worth approximately R75 million ($4.5 million), with the Scottish Premiership club set to tie him down on a four-year contract.

South African Star's Path to European Football

Makhanya started his journey in the Marumo Gallants DStv Diski Challenge system before Stellenbosch FC gave him his real platform in the Betway Premiership. That 2022/23 campaign at Stellies was the one that turned heads — he picked up a nomination for South African Young Footballer of the Year and won the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player award. That steady progress earned him a place in Hugo Broos's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though he did not feature in any of Bafana's four matches at the tournament. Philadelphia reportedly turned down as many as four separate offers for the defender, with bids apparently reaching R65 million before Rangers finally got their deal done at R75 million.
