Matfield: Siya Kolisi Still Vital for Springboks 2026

Victor Matfield has come out firmly in defence of Siya Kolisi, insisting the Springbok captain remains a cornerstone of Rassie Erasmus's thinking ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Speaking on the Rugby Rivals podcast, the former Bok lock pushed back on any suggestion that Kolisi's place in the squad is under genuine threat — despite the impressive form Paul de Villiers showed during the recent Nations Championship.

Leadership Value Beyond Individual Talent

Matfield's argument cuts to the heart of what makes a Test captain irreplaceable. It is not always about whether the man with the armband outranks every teammate on a one-to-one talent comparison. It is about what he unlocks in the 14 men around him. "Siya is just keeping that team together," Matfield said. "We've seen it all over the years. There was Sean Fitzpatrick, Francois Pienaar and John Smit. A lot of them came under pressure — are they the best players in the team? But sometimes one man can make 15 guys play better."

That is a lineage worth taking seriously. Pienaar and Smit both captained South Africa to World Cup glory. Matfield played under Smit and knows precisely what that kind of leadership is worth in a dressing room under pressure. His endorsement of Kolisi carries real weight.

Performance Pressure Under Erasmus

He was equally clear that no player under Erasmus operates with a guaranteed jersey. "The thing with Rassie is that everyone is under pressure. If you don't perform, you won't play the next week. Doesn't matter who you are. I think that's why we see some of our senior players really performing well every week." That accountability culture, Matfield argues, is exactly what is keeping veterans like Kolisi sharp rather than complacent.

The same logic applies to Eben Etzebeth. Matfield expects both him and Kolisi to feature at the next World Cup. "When Eben is in form, he is in a class of his own," he said. With the Springboks just over a year from that tournament, Matfield sees no reason to discard either man.

The debate around Kolisi's future is not going away, but Matfield has made his position plain: the captain's value to this squad goes well beyond the breakdown statistics.
