Lions Sweat Over Delport & Jonker for Griquas Clash

The Lions head into Saturday's Currie Cup round-four clash at Kimberley carrying two significant concerns — and one of them could land them without a captain. Lock Ruan Delport faces a disciplinary hearing after the yellow card he received for a dangerous cleanout in last weekend's 42-19 win over the Bulls XV was upgraded to a red card. If the hearing goes against the 24-year-old, he misses the trip to Suzuki Stadium entirely.

Rematch Against Defending Champions Griquas

The fixture carries extra weight. This is a rematch of last year's Currie Cup final, which Griquas won 27-25 at Ellis Park. The Kimberley side arrive in this encounter having already beaten the Bulls 56-26 and edged the Cheetahs 24-21 in the current campaign — they are a different proposition on home turf, and the Lions know it.

Compounding the captaincy uncertainty is an ankle concern around in-form inside centre Rynhardt Jonker, who was withdrawn during the Bulls fixture as a precaution. Lions coach Mziwakhe Nkosi was straightforward about the decision. "We didn't want to take any chances with Rynhardt Jonker, so we took him off early," he said after the final whistle at UJ Stadium.

Leadership Options if Delport Suspended

Should Delport be suspended, Nkosi has options. Former Junior Boks captain Thando Biyela and fellow flanker Jarod Cairns are among the candidates in contention to wear the armband in Kimberley.

Performance Gains Despite Injury Concerns

Despite the off-field headaches, Nkosi had no shortage of positives to draw from the performance itself. "From a performance point of view, we wanted to build on what we did against the Pumas, and we achieved that," he said. The Lions have now won their last two Currie Cup outings after an earlier stumble, and the coach was equally pleased to rotate his squad. "We'll take a lot of confidence from this victory and we managed to give a number of players valuable game time, especially Cecil Parsons, Ruan Swart and Exauce Kevani."

The Lions sit in a strong position in the Currie Cup standings heading into the Kimberley test, but facing the defending champions on their home ground — without their skipper and potentially without their first-choice midfield general — is a different challenge altogether. Nkosi's leadership decisions this week will define how his side show up on Saturday.
