Rob Smedley does not throw compliments around lightly. Speaking on the High Performance Racing podcast, Smedley called the McLaren driver 'the real deal', pointing specifically to the mental resilience Norris displayed around the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.
Norris Bounces Back After Grid Penalty
Norris absorbed a 10-place grid penalty at Spa and still showed genuine pace throughout the race, eventually finishing seventh. He then turned that momentum into a race win in Hungary — his first victory of the season. That sequence, Smedley argued, is exactly what separates a world champion from a driver who merely looks the part.
Dismissing Criticism From Outside the Paddock
The criticism of Norris, Smedley was clear, does not come from inside the teams. It comes from people on the periphery who reduce his story to a well-funded junior career. His counter-argument was blunt: plenty of drivers have had more money spent on their development and delivered nothing in Formula 1. Norris has delivered. Smedley described him as not just fast, but now consistently fast — and tough enough mentally to absorb pressure and convert it into results.

On the championship standings, Norris sits fifth with 128 points after 11 rounds. He trails Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in fourth by 10 points and leads Red Bull's Max Verstappen in sixth by 19. Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads the championship on 219 points for Mercedes, so the title fight is a separate conversation — but Norris is firmly in the mix for the runner-up positions that shape reputations and contracts.
