Kieran Read has seen enough. The former All Blacks captain believes his country is leaving one of rugby's most destructive weapons holstered at precisely the wrong moment — with the Springboks waiting and the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series about to begin.

Savea Not Getting Opportunities to Attack

Speaking on The Good, The Bad The Rugby Australia New Zealand podcast, Read made the case bluntly: the All Blacks are not getting the ball to Ardie Savea in positions where he can hurt teams. Against the Springboks, that kind of waste will be punished.

'We need to utilise our back five in terms of our forward pack to carry the ball,' said Read, himself a former No.8 who understands better than most what a dominant loose forward can do when given the right platform. 'At the moment I'm probably not seeing Ardie carrying the ball enough in positions where he can make an influence.'

The frustration in Read's voice is understandable. Savea is a generational ball carrier — the kind who can shift a Test match in a single phase. Yet Read points out he only really saw the skipper used off the back of the scrum against Ireland, something that should be a base-level weapon, not an exception. 'That's the first time I've actually really seen him do that. I'm like screaming out for them to put him there or utilise what he's got. That's what he can do off the back of a maul, what he can do when he's down a 15m channel or like two passes wide. So why is he not getting the ball in those positions?'

Springboks Exploit All Blacks Predictability

It is a fair question, and one the Springbok defence will be delighted to see remain unanswered. The Springboks are built to strangle teams who are predictable. If Savea is not threatening them in space, the Boks' defensive line can compress, and their carrying game can dominate territory. Read understands this dynamic and warned against leaning too heavily on lock Sam Darry, despite his impressive form across the July Tests in the Nations Championship.

'Sam Darry has probably been our best player in the forwards over these three Tests,' Read acknowledged. 'Against the South Africans, they're going to double-team him, and he probably doesn't have that in his game to be able to be doing that all game. Against a great defence, which is what they have, we need to have our best ball carriers carrying; otherwise we will get shunted back, and we'll get put under pressure.'

Speed and Creativity Over Raw Power

That view aligns with what Jeff Wilson has also argued — that the All Blacks must lean into speed, subtlety and creativity rather than trying to outmuscle the Springboks on their terms. Read's point about Savea is precisely that: use your most dynamic carrier dynamically, not as an afterthought.

The timing of this debate adds another layer. Savea will miss the first three matches of the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry tour — including Friday's opener against the Stormers at DHL Stadium in Cape Town — before joining the squad ahead of the first Test against South Africa in Johannesburg on 22 August. That means Steve Hansen's side must build their patterns and momentum without their captain for the warm-up fixtures against the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls. When Savea does arrive, the systems need to be in place to use him properly. Read's message is clear: stop making him a passenger and start building the game around what he does best.

The All Blacks' first real test of whether they've heard that message comes on Friday night at DHL Stadium — and South Africa will be watching every move.
