Kaizer Chiefs Beat Kruger United 3-1 in PSL Opener

Kaizer Chiefs top the PSL table after a 3-1 win over Kruger United. Wandile Duba brace, Flávio Silva goal, and Luke Baartman shines on debut.

Kaizer Chiefs are top of the Betway Premiership after dismantling Kruger United 3-1 at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday evening. Wandile Duba grabbed a brace and Flávio Silva added the third as Fernando Da Cruz began his era at Amakhosi with exactly the statement his supporters were hoping for.

Da Cruz Sets High Performance Standards

Da Cruz made clear after the final whistle that the performance is the standard he expects throughout the season — and on this evidence, there is real reason to believe Chiefs can sustain it. They sit level on three points with Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu and Sekhukhune United, with goal difference separating the pack after a competitive opening weekend of fixtures.

The headline name from the night was 20-year-old Luke Baartman. Given limited opportunities last season, the youngster repaid Da Cruz's faith with a Man of the Match display — composed on the ball, dangerous in attack, and far more mature than his age suggests. If Baartman can find that level consistently, he is a genuine breakout candidate for the 2026/27 campaign.

Baartman and Duba Shine in Victory

Duba was equally impressive. The 22-year-old's pace and movement stretched Kruger United's defence from the first whistle, and his clinical finishing underlined the growing belief that he is ready for a regular starting role. Silva, meanwhile, showed exactly why Da Cruz will keep building through him — linking play, holding the ball under pressure and finding the net once again.

With new signing Langelihle Phili still to make his mark, Chiefs' attack already looks genuinely threatening. Next up for Amakhosi is the MTN8, where the pressure — and the stakes — will only rise.
