Friday, 24 July — Cheetahs v Sharks | 17:00 SAST | Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein

This is the fixture I am keying in on first. Bloemfontein at altitude, a partisan Toyota Stadium crowd, and a Sharks side that arrives with one enforced change to their starting XV — coach Mike Vowles has had to reshuffle, and in my experience those late adjustments can disrupt your combinations precisely when an away trip up the highveld demands the opposite. The Cheetahs have always been a dangerous side at home; they play with tempo and they will back themselves to expose any seam the Sharks show in the forward exchanges. Saturday, 25 July — Lions v Pumas | 15:00 SAST | Emirates Airline Park, Johannesburg

Emirates Airline Park has been a fortress for the Lions and the Pumas will need to be disciplined in how they contest the collisions. The Lions carry hard and direct, and as a former No. 8 I always look at how the visiting loose trio organises itself against that sort of pressure. If the Pumas can slow Lions ball at the ruck and play field position smartly, they are more than capable of making this uncomfortable. If not, this could get away from them quickly in the second half.

Saturday, 25 July — Griquas v Bulls | 17:05 SAST | Suzuki Stadium, Kimberley

Kimberley is one of those venues that chews up complacent visitors. The Bulls arrive as clear favourites — they usually do — but Griquas at Suzuki Stadium have a habit of making life very uncomfortable for big-name opponents. Worth noting that Sebastian de Klerk, who suffered a foot injury during a URC clash against the Stormers in March, has been in the Bulls' plans on the wing, so how that squad depth holds up across a busy schedule is worth tracking. The Bulls will want to keep their combinations sharp ahead of what is a demanding international window for the country's best players.

Sunday, 26 July — Boland Cavaliers v Stormers XXIII | 15:00 SAST | Boland RU Ground

Sunday's game is a development window in real time. The Stormers XXIII setup is a pipeline exercise — younger players getting competitive minutes — and for Boland, every home game is a statement of intent for their programme. I will be watching the Boland pack. If they can front up physically, it gives their backs a platform and gives their coaches something to build on. Do not sleep on this one.
