Chiefs and Pirates Top PSL Table After Opening Weekend

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have both hit the ground running in the 2026/27 Betway Premiership, and for the first time in years the title conversation feels like it belongs to more than one club. After the opening weekend, the Soweto giants share the top of the PSL table, each on three points.

Chiefs Make Statement with Clinical Victory

Chiefs made the longer trip worthwhile, beating promoted Kruger United 3-1 in Mbombela. It was a clinical attacking display — sharp, purposeful and exactly what Fernando Da Cruz needed from his first competitive match in charge. Da Cruz has made clear that performance is the standard he expects to see maintained throughout the season, and on that evidence Chiefs supporters have genuine reason to believe.

Pirates Grind Out Defensive Performance

Pirates did their job at Orlando Stadium, grinding out a 2-0 win over Milford. Abdeslam Ouaddou's side look well-organised defensively, though they were less convincing going forward. Ouaddou has acknowledged that several of his players are still carrying fatigue from FIFA World Cup participation, which adds context to a workmanlike rather than dominant display. The fact that Pirates also moved in new signings this window — including left-back Neo Rapoo — suggests the squad is still being shaped.

Defending champions Pirates ended Mamelodi Sundowns' eight-year stranglehold on the title last season. Sundowns were not in action this opening weekend but will not be written off — they remain the benchmark against which every title challenge is measured.

Attention now shifts to the MTN8, with the preliminary round draw set for Thursday 6 August. Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns will all feature, and Pirates go in as favourites having won the last four editions. Chiefs will want to prove their league form is no flash in the pan.
