Western Province 42-25 Eastern Province. On home soil at Grey High School, Eastern Province gave this one everything — and for a spell early in the second half, they had Western Province on the ropes. But Province's class told in the end, and they ran away with a convincing opening-day victory in Gqeberha.
It was the hosts' own who drew first blood. Eastern Province crossed inside the opening exchanges and added the conversion to lead 7-0, and the crowd roared. This was their week, their ground, their moment. Western Province regrouped quickly. Two converted tries in short succession swung the momentum entirely, and suddenly Province led 14-7. Eastern Province steadied with a penalty before the break to make it 14-10 at the whistle. Tight, tense, and anything but settled.
The second half opened with Eastern Province picking up exactly where they left off. Another penalty pushed them to 14-13, and then came the try that turned the ground electric — Eastern Province over the line and converted to lead 20-14. The locals were ahead, playing with belief and noise. Western Province, to their enormous credit, did not flinch.
What followed was the match. Western Province hit back with a converted try to reclaim the lead at 21-20 — one point in it, the whole week suddenly alive. Then they struck again, 28-20. Then again, 35-20. Three converted tries in a breathless passage of play that ripped the game away from Eastern Province before they could draw breath. Eastern Province grabbed a consolation try to make it 35-25, showing the character that had defined their afternoon, but Western Province had the final word — a fifth converted try sealing it at 42-25.
