Western Province XV conjured one of the matches of the week at Grey High on Thursday, overturning a nine-point half-time deficit to beat Golden Lions 43-33 in a breathless encounter that had the crowd on its feet from the first whistle to the last.
The Lions came out swinging. Two converted tries inside the opening exchanges had them 14-0 clear and looking every bit a side brimming with confidence, with Noordheuwel's sizeable contingent in the pack making their presence felt. Province steadied briefly — a try and conversion pulling it back to 14-7 — but the Lions were not done. A third try made it 19-7, and when Province added a penalty just before the break, the scoreboard read 19-10 in the Lions' favour. The Cape side had work to do.
Whatever was said in that Province dressing room at half-time, it worked. They came out transformed. Two minutes of the second period barely felt like it had passed before Province crossed again, the conversion cutting the gap to two points at 19-17. The Lions hit back almost immediately — a converted try stretching their lead to 26-17 — and at that moment, a comfortable win looked the more likely outcome.
But Province, drawing on the deep talent pool of Paarl Boys High and Paul Roos, refused to fold. A try made it 26-22. The Lions responded with a converted effort of their own to lead 33-22 and appeared to have broken their opponents. They had not. What followed was extraordinary. Province scored three tries in a devastating closing spell, each one converted, reeling off 21 unanswered points to win 43-33. The lead changed hands for the first time with the score at 33-34, and Province never looked back.
