Chelsea Sign Morgan Rogers for Record £117m

Chelsea agree a club-record £117m deal for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, smashing their previous transfer record set by Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea have agreed a club-record £117m deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, making him the most expensive signing in the club's history. The 23-year-old will sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for a further year. Rogers will undergo a medical on Monday after returning from international duty at the 2026 World Cup.

The fee eclipses the £116m Manchester City agreed with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer, setting a new transfer record for an English player. It also surpasses Chelsea's previous record of £107m paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.

There is a significant windfall further down the chain. Middlesbrough, who sold Rogers to Villa in February 2024 for an initial £8m rising to £15m, hold a 20% sell-on clause on any profit Villa make. That entitles them to at least £20.4m from the Chelsea deal, depending on add-ons triggered at Villa Park — a figure Boro believe is an English record for a sell-on fee.

Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Villa and was part of the squad that won the Europa League last season. He has earned 21 senior England caps, scoring once, and featured in six games at this summer's World Cup. The move is being driven by new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso as he shapes his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Rogers is the second Villa midfielder to leave this week, following Youri Tielemans' £35m move to Manchester United. Villa have moved to replace them, bringing in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for more than £50m and lining up Wolves' Joao Gomes for £38m.

At Chelsea, Rogers will compete for attacking positions with Cole Palmer, Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens and Geovany Quenda, while Alejandro Garnacho is being sold. Alonso's preferred system — he has used a back four and a back five at previous clubs — will shape how the minutes are split. How he fits Rogers and Palmer together is the first big question of his Chelsea tenure.
