In an electrifying Currie Cup clash on Sunday, the Golden Lions emerged victorious over the Griquas with a 36-28 win in Kimberley. This hard-fought victory propels the Lions to third place in the 2024 Currie Cup standings, thanks to a stellar performance from Renzo du Plessis, who scored a brace of tries.
The match kicked off with a bang as Renzo du Plessis crossed the line in the fifth minute, showcasing his agility and strength. The Lions’ early lead was quickly countered by Griquas’ Zane Bester, who capitalized on excellent teamwork to score. In a tense final quarter, scrumhalf Nico Steyn sealed the win for the Lions with a decisive try, converted by Zander du Plessis, bringing the score to 36-28. Despite spirited attempts from the Griquas’ back three, the Lions’ defense held firm. Replacement Darrien Landsberg injected fresh energy into the Lions’ forwards, securing crucial turnovers and maintaining the pressure.
