Rassie Erasmus Wanted Benhard Janse van Rensburg

SA Rugby MagTuesday, 30 June 2026

Rassie Erasmus has revealed the Springboks pursued Benhard Janse van Rensburg before the centre committed to England. A costly miss for SA rugby.

Rassie Erasmus has confirmed the Springboks made a deliberate move for Benhard Janse van Rensburg before the 23-year-old centre committed his international future to England, ruling himself out of South African selection permanently.

Erasmus disclosed that he had wanted to bring Van Rensburg into either the senior Springbok squad or the South Africa A setup, a clear indication of the esteem in which the Bok coach held the midfielder. Those plans never came to fruition, and Van Rensburg has since aligned himself with the English rugby pathway, closing the door on a potential Test career in green and gold.

The admission carries weight. Erasmus does not express public interest in players lightly, and his willingness to fast-track prospects through South Africa A reflects genuine Test-level faith. That he saw that potential in Van Rensburg makes this a meaningful loss, not merely a footnote.

It also speaks to a problem South African rugby has not yet solved. England's financial pull and structured international pathway continue to attract young South African talent at the precise moment that talent is ready to break through. Van Rensburg is not the first, and he will not be the last.

Erasmus has constructed his Springbok regime around meticulous planning and precise squad management. Losing a player he had already earmarked, before that player even pulled on a Bok jersey, is a rare crack in that process — and one that reflects how competitive the global recruitment landscape has become.

Whether Van Rensburg develops into a genuine Test-level centre in England or becomes a cautionary tale of what might have been remains to be seen. For now, he is the one Rassie wanted but could not keep.
