Sharks forward Phepsi Buthelezi has acknowledged the uphill battle his team faces against Bordeaux in their final Investec Champions Cup pool match on Sunday. Despite a recent home defeat to Toulouse, the Sharks remain determined to secure their place in the round of 16.
Speaking to reporters from southwestern France, Buthelezi expressed the squad’s optimism:
We’re all in a really good space. Our goal for this week is pretty simple and straightforward – we obviously want to qualify for the Champions Cup round of 16.
Mathematical Safety
Currently sitting fourth in Pool 1, the Sharks have a five-point lead over Ulster and Exeter, who face off on Friday. Thanks to a superior points difference, the Sharks could still qualify even if they lose to Bordeaux without earning a bonus point.
Cold Climate, Tough Opponent
Adjusting to the chilly French winter has been an added challenge for the Durban-based team.
It was minus two degrees, so it’s a bit of a change for us coming from hot and humid Durban,” Buthelezi shared.
Bordeaux, however, presents the Sharks with their biggest test yet. Undefeated in the pool stages, the French club sits atop both the Champions Cup and Top 14 standings. Their recent 69-17 demolition of Exeter highlights their attacking prowess.
We know we have our work cut out for us,” said Buthelezi. “Bordeaux are a quality side. They’ve scored a lot of tries in their last five or six games, so we know that defensively we will have to roll up our sleeves.”
What’s at Stake?
A victory or even a narrow defeat could see the Sharks advance, keeping South African hopes alive in the prestigious European competition. With Bordeaux aiming to rectify last season’s quarter-final heartbreak, Sunday’s clash promises high stakes and intense rugby.
