Union Bordeaux-Bègles delivered a masterclass performance to crush the Sharks 66-12 at Stade Chaban-Delmas on Sunday, securing top spot in Pool 1 and eliminating the South African side from the Champions Cup.
Penaud Steals the Show
Damian Penaud was the star of the evening, scoring a remarkable six tries in a single match. The French winger dismantled the Sharks’ defense almost single-handedly, showcasing his speed, vision, and playmaking abilities.
The Sharks had a dream start, scoring twice in the first six minutes through Jurenzo Julius and Hakeem Kunene. However, Bordeaux quickly responded, with Penaud kickstarting his scoring spree in the 12th minute and completing a first-half hat-trick to give the hosts a 19-12 lead at halftime.
Floodgates Open in the Second Half
The second half saw Bordeaux turn on the style, adding seven more tries. Maxime Lucu and Yoram Moefana joined the scoring spree, while Penaud added three more tries to cap a brilliant individual performance. His contributions didn’t stop there—Penaud unselfishly set up Jacques Nguimbous for his first professional try, highlighting his all-around brilliance.
Sharks’ Exit and Bordeaux’s Momentum
The Sharks, who needed a win or a close loss to progress, were outclassed. They now drop to the Challenge Cup playoffs as defending champions. Bordeaux’s ten-try demolition solidifies their reputation as top contenders for this season’s Champions Cup.
