The DHL Stormers have bolstered their backline with the signing of veteran scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, while young talent Jonathan Roche continues to impress as a rising star in the midfield.
Reinach’s Arrival
Reinach, a two-time Springbok World Cup winner, will join the Cape Town franchise next season. The 34-year-old’s move comes as Herschel Jantjies departs for Bayonne and Paul de Wet is rumored to head to the Vodacom Bulls. Despite his age, Stormers coach John Dobson has full confidence in Reinach’s abilities.
He is a world-class scrumhalf and one of the best in South Africa,” said Dobson. “We’ve done our research, and his speed and professionalism are still at their peak.”
Dobson believes Reinach’s competitive nature and work ethic will raise training standards within the squad.
He’s aiming for the next World Cup, and if anyone can do it, it’s him.”
Roche’s Rise
While Reinach adds experience, Jonathan Roche is making a name for himself as a versatile and hard-working centre. The 21-year-old recently debuted in the Investec Champions Cup and has drawn comparisons to Springbok star Damian de Allende.
He’s big, strong, aggressive, and defends well,” said former Stormers coach Robbie Fleck. “Like Damian, he’s improved his passing, vision, and decision-making.”
Fleck also highlighted Roche’s unique defensive versatility, excelling at both inside and outside centre.
We haven’t seen the best of him yet. He’s coachable, hardworking, and holds a lot of promise.”
Looking Ahead
With Reinach’s experience and Roche’s potential, the Stormers are building a formidable backline for the future. As Dobson looks to balance youth and experience, the team is poised to remain competitive on both domestic and European stages.
