John Dobson and Evan Roos have admitted that the Stormers face a daunting challenge as they aim to secure a spot in the last 16 of the Investec Champions Cup with a win against Racing 92 in Paris on Saturday.
The Stormers, who enter the clash with confidence after a dominant 40-0 victory over Sale Sharks, must overcome unfamiliar conditions at the enclosed La Defense Arena, along with a strong Racing side desperate to end their winless streak.
Unfamiliar Territory
“It’s something different,” said Roos. “We had our captain’s run this morning, and it’s weird playing with the roof over your head and not seeing the sky. And it’s a 4G pitch, one of the better ones we’ve played on.”
Dobson acknowledged the challenge posed by the unique conditions and Racing’s quality:
We’ve never seen anything like La Defense Arena. It’s a massive task, but we’re confident and excited to be part of the Champions Cup. We want to progress, but it’s going to be a very tough game.”
Key Changes for Stormers
The Cape side will be without key players Manie Libbok, Warrick Gelant, and Deon Fourie, with the trio rested ahead of their upcoming Vodacom URC clash against Leinster. Joseph Dweba returns from injury, while Evan Roos anchors the back row.
Despite the absences, Dobson remains optimistic:
We’re missing a couple of playmakers, so we’re going to have to fight. If we can stand up, impose our game plan, and eke out a result, it’ll be a massive confidence boost.”
What’s at Stake
While Racing 92 are out of contention for the knockout stages, the Stormers must not only win but hope for favorable results in other matches to secure their playoff spot.
Dobson emphasized the importance of discipline:
It’s not about entertaining the Parisian crowd with a shootout. The entertainment we want to provide is on the scoreboard. We have a clear plan, and if we execute it, we’ll be fine.”
Looking Ahead
A win in Paris would mark a significant milestone for the Stormers and set the tone for their upcoming fixtures, including a crucial URC clash against league leaders Leinster next week.
