Elrigh Louw has acknowledged the resurgence of the Sharks this season as the Bulls prepare for a fierce Vodacom URC derby at Kings Park on Saturday.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the Bulls’ 13-Test Springbok flanker praised the Sharks’ recent form, which has seen them secure three consecutive URC wins, positioning them sixth on the log.
“This year, the Sharks are really gelling as a team,” Louw said. “Last season it was a bit up and down, but then they won the Challenge Cup, and this year they’re looking great.”
The Bulls, coming off a disappointing 30-21 loss to Northampton in the Champions Cup, are determined to bounce back and secure a crucial win in what will be their final match of 2024.
Derby Reset
The clash against the Sharks marks the first of six consecutive South African derbies for the Bulls in the URC, a stretch of games that could define their season.
“This is a massive game for us,” Louw emphasized. “It’s not just a derby; it’s a chance to reset after last week. Psychologically, it’s really important to end the year on a high note.”
Reflecting on the Northampton defeat, Louw admitted the Bulls fell short: “We weren’t switched on for the full 80 minutes. It’s a learning opportunity, and we have to be better this weekend.”
Battle Plan
Acknowledging the Sharks’ skill and flair, Louw expects a high-paced, contest-heavy encounter:
“They love the game when it gets loose. We’re expecting lots of kicking, contestables from their No 9, and a strong challenge at the set piece with the quality they have in the pack.”
For the Sharks, the derby is an opportunity to restore their URC momentum after a humbling Champions Cup loss to Leicester last week. But for the Bulls, it’s a must-win clash as they look to kick off their six-derby run with a statement victory.
