David Kriel delivered a standout performance at Ellis Park on Saturday, as the Vodacom Bulls overcame the Lions 35-22 in a thrilling URC derby.
Second-Half Resurgence
Trailing 11-10 at halftime and losing key forwards Ruan Nortje and Elrigh Louw to injuries, the Bulls turned to their bench for inspiration. Replacements Willie le Roux, Canan Moodie, and Akker van der Merwe added energy, while Marcell Coetzee spearheaded the comeback with a dominant second-half display.
Kriel stepped up in the absence of misfiring goal-kicker Boeta Chamberlain, scoring 12 points, including a first-half try, two conversions, and a penalty. His contributions, alongside second-half tries from Coetzee, Cobus Wiese, and Van der Merwe, sealed the Bulls’ victory.
Lions Falter After Promising Start
Despite a strong first-half showing, the Lions couldn’t maintain their momentum. Centre Henco van Wyk and lock Etienne Oosthuizen crossed the line, with flyhalf Sam Francis adding 12 points from the boot. However, the Lions struggled to capitalize on limited possession in the second half.
What’s Next?
The Bulls head to Cape Town in two weeks to face the Stormers in a rescheduled round 1 match, while the Lions will host the Stormers when the URC resumes mid-February.
