Springbok legend Siya Kolisi has emphasized that his primary goal is to earn his place in the national squad rather than focus on retaining the captaincy, as South African rugby greats Jean de Villiers and Corne Krige back him to continue leading the Boks.
Kolisi’s Perspective
At 33, with 92 Test caps and 61 matches as captain, Kolisi acknowledges the competition for the No. 6 jersey ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
We know there are many players competing for the Boks’ No 6 jersey. I will be competing against players who are much younger than me.”
Rather than fixating on leadership, Kolisi insists his only focus is playing well enough to be in the squad.
🗣️ “To be honest, I’m not thinking about the captaincy. I just want to make the team.”
Returning to the Sharks after his stint with Racing 92, Kolisi says he’s feeling strong and ready to begin intense training again.
Backing from Former Bok Captains
Jean de Villiers:
- Believes Kolisi is still the right man to lead the team.
- Expects Rassie Erasmus to evaluate leadership options annually.
- “The captain has to justify his place, and Siya is still doing that.”
Corne Krige:
- Feels Kolisi should continue as Bok captain for the next two years.
- “His presence and the support he enjoys make an incredible difference.”
- Stresses that the Boks’ leadership structure does not rely on one individual.
What’s Next?
Kolisi is determined to make an impact for both the Sharks and the Springboks as he fights for his spot ahead of the next World Cup.
