The Pumas are getting ready for a Currie Cup showdown against the Lions this weekend aiming to get closer to a spot in the semi finals. After a 88 point match last weekend that ended in a draw Jimmy Stonehouse and his team are under pressure to deliver an outstanding performance.
In an interview Pumas coach Jimmy Stonehouse discussed the rollercoaster match from weekend recognizing both the highs and lows. “The first half was really good ” Stonehouse mentioned. “However as you saw the second half wasn’t as strong. It was a game of rugby. Fortunately we managed to get three points from it. However our defense and kicking game were lacking in the half.”
With the draw fresh, in their minds the Pumas understand what they need to do to secure a win this weekend. Stonehouse emphasized areas that need improvement and highlighted the Lions fast paced style of play.
We need to shut down their game line, defense and offloads to stand a chance. They’ve got some top notch players who can really make a difference on the field. Our defense has to be rock no room for error.
The Pumas had some issues with their defense in the half of the last game so Stonehouse is focusing on tightening things up before facing the Lions. It’s crucial to prevent them from gaining ground and crossing that game line. Thats been our emphasis in training.
The competition in the Currie Cup is intense with the Bulls and Cheetahs also coming out even last weekend. The top four teams are all neck and neck now. Stonehouse emphasized how every point matters as we aim for those final spots. Just a single point from our match against the Lions could have put us at the top of the standings if we had secured these two points as well. Now it’s all level playing field so every bonus point counts.
As we hit the halfway mark of the season each upcoming match, for the Pumas is crucial. Stonehouse discussed the teams goals for the rest of the campaign.
“We have a new team and our main aim is to reach the semi finals of the Currie Cup. We need to maximize our bonus points in every match especially since this game is away. Earning points here is crucial for us.”
The Pumas are fully aware of the challenges especially with URC players set to return to teams like the Bulls and Cheetahs bringing back some prominent names to the competition. “It’s vital for us to secure bonus points and win our home games ” Stonehouse stressed. “It’s a road ahead especially with matches against the Bulls and Cheetahs remaining but we are focused on achieving that goal to make it to the semi final.”
As they gear up to face off against the Lions, Pumas fans can anticipate a team eager for victory and aiming to solidify their spot in the top four. Its shaping up to be a clash, with both sides understanding that the stakes are incredibly high.
