The Sharks extended their Vodacom URC winning streak to four matches with a narrow 20-17 victory over the Vodacom Bulls at Kings Park on Saturday, thanks to a stellar performance from brothers Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse.
Jaden crossed the whitewash for a crucial try, while Jordan contributed eight points from the tee to help secure the Sharks’ first win over the Bulls in nearly two years. The result marked their fifth URC victory of the season and solidified their status as one of the competition’s in-form teams.
Disruptions and Drama
The Sharks were thrown into disarray even before kick-off, with captain Siya Kolisi (calf), hooker Dylan Richardson, and lock Emile van Heerden (both illness) forced to withdraw. Replacement Ethan Bester’s outing was cut short in the 17th minute after a concussion scare.
Despite the setbacks, the Sharks struck early. Jordan Hendrikse slotted a penalty before converting Jaden’s try to give the hosts a 10-0 lead. However, the Bulls hit back with two tries from Cobus Wiese and Harold Vorster, both converted by Johan Goosen, to take a 14-10 advantage into halftime.
Key Moments and Controversy
Goosen added another three points early in the second half, but the game’s turning point came when winger Sebastian de Klerk was shown a contentious yellow card. The Sharks capitalised with a penalty try, levelling the scores at 17-17.
Jaden Hendrikse then kicked a penalty to give the Sharks a narrow lead heading into the final quarter. The Bulls had a late opportunity to snatch victory, opting for an attacking lineout instead of taking the points. A knock-on dashed their hopes, allowing Jaden to kick the ball into touch to seal the win.
What’s Next?
The Sharks will travel to Cape Town to face the DHL Stormers in a highly anticipated coastal derby next weekend. Meanwhile, the Bulls have completed their 2024 fixtures and will resume action on 11 January with a Champions Cup clash against Castres in France.
