The Sanlam Boland Kavaliers are set to face the Phangela SWD Eagles in their first home fixture of the 2024 Currie Cup First Division season this weekend. Following an impressive start with victories over Valke and Eastern Province (EP), head coach Hawies Fourie is optimistic about the team’s prospects but acknowledges areas for improvement.
Focusing on Improvements
Reflecting on their recent match against EP, Fourie noted, “We started really well against EP, leading 48-7 after 60 minutes. However, we made a lot of mistakes, conceded a yellow card, and allowed four tries in the last 20 minutes. We need to improve our performance in the last quarter of the game. Our defence and attack in the final 20 minutes need to be more consistent, and we must retain possession better.”
He also highlighted issues in set-pieces, particularly lineouts, where they lost four out of their first five. “Improving our lineouts and maintaining possession through phases are key areas we are focusing on against SWD,” he added.
Reflecting on the First Two Matches
The Kavaliers have had a strong start to their campaign, scoring nearly 100 points in their first two matches. Fourie described their opening match against Valke as a “quality game,” where they overcame a 17-7 deficit to secure a 46-32 victory. He praised the skillfulness of the players, emphasizing the importance of clinical execution, especially in broken play situations typical of the B Division.
Boland’s Development Initiatives
Boland Rugby has embarked on several initiatives to strengthen their team and overall program. “We have strong shareholders in Remgro and ARC, and we’ve developed a three-year plan to revive Boland Rugby and aim for Currie Cup A Division qualification,” Fourie explained.
The SAS Academy, led by Juan de Jongh and assisted by Cavalier’s coach Jacquin Jansen, plays a crucial role in developing future young talent. The academy is expected to produce quality players to strengthen Boland’s squad.
Goals for the Season
“Our primary goal for this season is to win the B Division and prepare well for next year to qualify for the Currie Cup through the SA Cup,” Fourie stated. He acknowledged the challenges of having a semi-professional squad, with players balancing work and training, but expressed confidence in their structured approach and long-term vision.
Home Fixture Against SWD Eagles
This weekend marks Boland’s first home fixture, although it will be played in Saldanha Bay at the club ground of Delicious RFC rather than their usual Wellington venue. “Tickets are available at the gates,” said Fourie, highlighting the vibrant club rugby scene in Boland with over 200 clubs, ensuring strong local support.
The match is expected to draw a full house, with the local club also playing, promising a lively atmosphere for the Kavaliers’ supporters.
Boland Kavaliers have shown strong potential in the opening rounds, and with focused improvements and strategic development, they are poised for a successful season in the Currie Cup First Division.
