It’s been a seismic week in Pretoria. While much of the spotlight has understandably been on the departure of Director of Rugby Jake White, the Vodacom Bulls have wasted no time in signalling their intent for the future — announcing a wave of big-name signings that could very well reshape the squad for seasons to come.
From seasoned internationals to returning heroes, the Bulls are bulking up. But the real question now looms large: with Jake White gone, who will steer this exciting new-look herd?
Jake’s Final Power Play
Say what you want about Jake White, but the man knows how to build a squad. This latest flurry of signings — done just before his departure — might be his parting gift to Loftus. And what a gift it is.
Paul de Wet’s move from Cape Town to Pretoria is probably the most intriguing of the lot. A URC-winning scrumhalf with over 80 professional appearances, he brings composure, vision, and a winning mentality to the No. 9 jersey. Short-term deal or not, expect him to have a big say in how this team ticks next season.
Also returning to the fold is the electric Kurt-Lee Arendse. After dazzling fans with his speed and footwork in Japan, the Springbok flyer is back in familiar territory — and with his try-scoring antics for the Boks this past weekend, he’s clearly still in top gear. His post-Rugby Championship availability will be a massive boost for the Bulls’ backline.
Familiar Faces, Fresh Fire
Jeandré Rudolph is another exciting addition. The Currie Cup-winning flanker is a grafter — a man who thrives on hard work and consistency. Described as a “diesel-powered workhorse”, he’s a perfect fit for a Bulls team that prides itself on physicality and grit. Don’t be surprised if he quickly becomes a fan favourite at Loftus.
The return of lock Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg brings both muscle and nous to the second row. Having played over 170 games in France’s bruising Top 14, he knows what it takes to scrap for every inch — and with his previous stint at the Bulls, he’ll slot in with little fuss.
Another familiar name back in blue is Marvin Orie. The 2023 World Cup winner adds serious Springbok pedigree to the pack. With experience at multiple franchises — including a previous stint with the Bulls — Orie could be a key leader on and off the park, especially with younger forwards learning the ropes.
And perhaps the most nostalgic return of all: Jan Serfontein. The classy centre who last played for the Bulls in 2017 is back in Tshwane on a three-year deal. After a stellar run in France, he brings international experience, defensive solidity, and a touch of magic to the midfield.
What Now, Without Jake?
Now for the elephant in the locker room: with Jake White out, who takes the reins?
Franco Smith’s name has been doing the rounds, and with his strong track record — especially in Europe — he could be just the man to carry this new-look squad forward. Still, the Bulls are yet to confirm their next head coach, leaving fans anxiously awaiting clarity.
My Take
As someone who’s spent time inside professional setups, I can tell you this — transitions like this can either disrupt or inspire. And judging by the calibre of players walking through the Loftus gates, it looks like inspiration is winning.
But the signings alone aren’t enough. This squad now needs identity, direction, and a clear game plan. Whoever takes over from Jake has a goldmine of talent at their disposal — but they’ll need to mould it into a cohesive, hungry unit that plays with Bulls pride.
One thing’s for sure: with the names coming in and the stakes rising, Loftus Versfeld is going to be buzzing next season. The fans deserve a team that plays with heart, and with this crop, they just might get it.
Watch this space. The Bulls are reloading. And the herd looks hungry.
