Stormers bruiser Evan Roos may not currently be leading the charge for the Springbok No 8 jersey, but the 25-year-old remains firmly in Rassie Erasmus’ long-term plans—despite swirling speculation about his recent national camp omission.
Reports emerged last week suggesting a potential rift between Roos and the Bok coaching staff, leading to his exclusion from the recent Springbok alignment camp in Cape Town. But according to Rapport, the decision to leave Roos out was purely based on rugby form and positional competition—not any off-field drama.
Sources close to the national setup confirmed that Roos remains in the mix, but that others currently hold the edge in the selection race.
“There’s no politics here. The only reason Evan wasn’t at the camp is because there are other No 8s ahead of him at the moment,” a source told Rapport. “That could change quickly—especially if Jasper [Wiese] doesn’t recover in time.”
Wiese, the incumbent Bok No 8, is currently nursing a neck injury that could impact his availability for the July internationals. Should he be ruled out, the door could swing wide open for a dynamic player like Roos—especially if he impresses in the latter stages of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship with the Stormers.
Dobson Defends His Man
In response to the media speculation, Stormers head coach John Dobson was quick to throw his support behind Roos, dismissing any claims of personal issues affecting his national prospects.
“Evan is a great team man, on and off the field,” said Dobson. “He’s focused, committed, and wants to be a Springbok again. He’s putting in the work.”

Roos, known for his explosive carries and physical edge, has had a mixed season—flashes of brilliance offset by inconsistency. But few doubt the raw potential he brings to the table when he’s at his best.
Bothma: Let Roos Do the Talking on the Field
Former Bulls, Sharks, and Namibia international Renaldo Bothma also weighed in after speaking directly with Roos. He confirmed that Roos denied any reports linking his father to selection complications—a rumor that had gained traction on social media.
“Evan just wants to focus on his rugby,” Bothma shared. “He didn’t want to get into the media noise and asked that people respect that. He’s working hard to earn his spot back and letting his performances do the talking.”
Not Out, Just Waiting for His Shot
Roos’ Springbok journey is far from over. With Hanekom and Juarno Augustus currently rated ahead of him and Wiese under injury watch, there’s every chance Roos could force his way back into contention with a strong finish to the URC season.
For now, the message is clear: no fallouts, no drama—just a player on the fringes, pushing to break back into a green and gold jersey.
